What is Biology?
My specific interests are in Evolutionary
Biology and Sociobiology
What is Evolutionary Biology?

What is Biology?
In the most generalized sense, Biology is the study of Life.
More precise,
it is the scientific
study of the nature and history of all known living organisms,
past and present.
For now, this field of scientific study only includes actual study of
Life as we know it here on Planet Earth. However, the idea and scope of the field of
biology encompasses all life, everywhere, and will expand to accommodate any new
life forms we find, wherever we may find them; whether that be here on this
planet or somewhere other than Earth.
What is Evolutionary Biology?
According to the KLI Theory Lab:
A powerful scientific database, A public service of the
Konrad Lorenz Institute for Evolution and Cognition Research,
"[Evolutionary Biology] refers to the collective disciplines of biology that treat the evolutionary process and the characteristics of populations of organisms, as well as ecology, behavior, and systematics"
So basically, it means to study Life while keeping in mind an understanding of the Nature and History of
its Evolution. Not only that (to keep it's evolutionary history in mind), but to
also go beyond that and be the area of science which actually searches for and
studies that history.
For example, evolutionary biologists want to find out about
not only the anatomical but also the genetic links between species. Sometimes we
can better understand a species' current form and function in the context of
it's place on the tree
of life and the various environmental conditions it may have experienced
along the way.
There's probably really no point in drawing a distinction between
Biology and Evolutionary Biology anymore since, in the long run, any worthwhile
study of life is dependant on an
understanding of its evolution (if it is going to be scientifically sound Biology
that is).
