Arachnida Possible spider from the Upper Parachute Creek Member of the Green River Formation |
My intentions with this page are to show you what I found and ask what you think
it is.
As if it's not obvious enough already, I think it's a spider.
Don't worry about being insulting by saying that you can't really tell much from
looking at this first image. It's not any better than what the guys saw through
the loop the other day at Dennis' place.
The only reason I never said anything until now is that I have been
borrowing Kent's microscope for a few months and finally got around to looking
at this thing (and lots of other specimens)
up close within the past week or so.

Now what do you think? Is this enough detail for ya?
I wouldn't be very impressed if I saw a photo like this on a well-known,
reputable paleo site (i.e. paleocurrents.com), but I had no idea I could
actually get anything even close to this quality with just a cheap-ass digital
camera. So, I never tried before.
Now that I can see what can be done on a shoe-string budget (and free use my
friend's microscope), I think I'll get on the ball and take as many mircoscopic
photos of as many specimens as I can until he yanks it back.

In this image, I have marked (using "MS Paint") legs with green lines and feet
with red circles.

ere is the counterpart of the specimen in the above images.

Microscopic photo.

This is a cropped copy of the image above with slight sharpening.

This is a closer (actually zoomed in with the microscope) view of a section of
legs.

Closer look at another section of legs.

So, as I end every page on this entire web site, what do you think?
Is this a spider, or are there other organisms which look enough like spiders in
enough significant aspects that I should be
looking elsewhere?
I would very much like to hear any and all tips you have for me that might help
identify this specimen.
Thanks.
