Friday, July 23rd, 2010 - Volunteer Trail Work with FJ Summiteers, Stay he Trail, and the National Forest Service
on Day 3 of the 2010 FJ Summit in Ouray, Colorado

On Friday, we joined up with some other Summiteers, as well as Justin from Stay the Trail and a couple forest service personnel
from the local ranger district for some trail work (the first such event of its kind ever at the FJ Summit).

Here are the ones I decided to upload for this page...

The main tasks for the day revolved around moving, constructing and installing signs of various sorts.

First we headed South to Ironton (access point for Corkscrew Gulch, etc).

This sign was not earning it's keep....kinda off in the brush a little bit, and not likely to be studied as people pass by.

Tammy (one of the two Forest Service folks that we were working for) told us about a very nice hiking trail up there.

This is where they determined that this particular sign would do more good;
out in the main, wide open parking/staging area, not just along the road once people get rolling for the day.
From left to right, it's Sun Fusion owner (name?), Rotorhead1 (Sun Fusion) and Tammy (NFS).

Here we have Warren (NFS), Justin (Stay the Trail), Sun Fusion owner (name?) and JammerGirl

Of course, you know Sandi by now  :)

Our next stop was just a little ways up Camp Bird Road.
They needed a new sign installed here. Sun Fusion owner spouse getting into the act in this photo on the right.

It was very cool to see everyone taking turns, pitching in to help with these tasks...

This is Tammy (NFS). Happy, friendly, and she just got some great news for her ranger district that morning...
something about a grant to help with certain critical projects they've been wanting to work on....very cool being there for that breaking news.

and each time we got the sign up into place, it was kind of a special moment.

Next, we went a little further up Camp Bird Road, and stopped at the turn-off for Camp Bird
(and short-cut for Imogene Pass; which was just recently opened again for public traffic).

Tammy and Warren walked around a bit; scoping out potential places for this sign. Instructions were given, but it
wasn't completely obvious at first why the spot that they were told to put it was chosen. So, they just wanted to
check things out from different angles to make sure they were doing what actually made the most sense.

It's not easy digging post holes in Ouray, and these guys really went at it.

It was cool to get to hear stories from Warren (and Tammy) throughout the day.
Just getting to hang out with them like this made the whole thing worth it, no matter what else we got into.

At times, the pickins got a bit skimpy....too skimpy to get out with the post hole digger.
So, we had to scoop what we could grab onto out with our hands.

Here's Justin (StT), He really hit that hard rock ground with that steel bar.
I got to big rocks and tried to go around them to dig them out of the way.
He just kept smacking at them with this thing till they broke into pieces....
a little at a time, and he cut through some pretty impressive stuff.

This sign is intended to alert folks that are coming here from the Telluride side of Imogene Pass
of the semi-residential and camping areas they are approaching.

Nice place to be working for the day.

Next (last work site for the day), we went further up Camp Bird Road toward Yankee Boy Basin
to the more traditional turn for Imogene Pass.

This time, we didn't need to dig any holes; we just used the posts that were already in place
(they just needed a little propping up)

Here's Warren (NFS) drilling some holes for the bolts to be used to hold on the new sign.

Unfortunately, one of the reasons for needing to put up new signs is that they 'disappear' from time to time.
Therefore, Warren made sure to have us bend the bolts to help increase the sign's lifespan.   :P

Later that day, the evening time on this Summit day was designated as 'Night in Ouray'.
Since there are catered meals provided to the Summiteers on the other nights of the Event,
the organizers decided it would be a good thing to have one night set aside to help out the local business scene
by encouraging us all to go out and eat somewhere in town (they started this at the 2009 Summit).
