Something interesting came up in a conversation about lazy thinking with a [Christian] friend of mine recently. He wondered how wide my gaze was focused with regard to poking and prodding at certain parts of the worldviews of believers.

Is my critical eye short-sighted? Do I ever turn the critical eye on anyone other than religious-believers? How about on my own worldview?

On this page are his comments (P:) followed by my response (S:). My response is not one of attacking him for wondering. On the extreme contrary, this is a very serious issue which I am very glad he brought up. I include this page on my sight as an attempt to show my openness to being confronted about such issues.

Wherever you think you might see me being short-sighted, please, I not only welcome it, but I invite you to bring it to my attention. As you'll see from my response, I don't think this is happening in this particular case, but I still have an open mind and the door to my office is always open to those who come to offer their point of view or some advice on my approach to these issues.

P: "I see the exact same level of lazy thinking in the average non-religious person who has never considered the tenets of Christianity, nor have ever questioned their own "secular" worldview. ... my point is that the problem of lazy thinking is not related to whether people are religious or not. I hope that you are just as zealous in your challenging non-religious persons to question their own worldviews as you are at challenging the Christian.

Now my response...

I totally appreciate this issue and I'm glad he brought it up. As far as aiming the blast specifically at the thinking of religious-believers though, certainly that might happen to a certain degree when it is a religious-believer that I am conversing with. It doesn't necessarily have to be that way.

That's the whole point of me sharing my Critical Thinking Field Notes at Every Fork in the Road. It's not just about theistic, religious believing, but believing of all kinds.

Of course we could all take a look at the lazy thinking of other kinds of believers. I can see how discussing the lazy thinking of Alien-Believers or Theoretical-Physicists may indeed even prove to be a more comfortable environment for religious-believers. Taking the focus off of their own worldview might enable them to open up and really think about how people think more than if they think that they are being attacked (even though attacking people is not on my agenda).

I see this, and I appreciate it. I am even working on doing so more. I'm still on the same path "towards" maturity my self though of course. No excuse for inconsideration on my part; just the facts.

If you read the stuff on this site, you'll see that I don't only attack the believing of God-Based and Magical-Force-Based Religious-Believers but also that of Alien-Believers, Psychics, Theoretic Physicists and others. Most important of all, it is not an attack on the "people of faith" (religious-believers), but on their thinking.

Wherever we are considering anything to be real and actual and claiming that we know it for sure based on "faith" rather than on evidence (real evidence, not evidence that must also be admitted into the mix also via faith to make it work), that is where I focus my attack; on the faulty thinking (whether done by me or anyone else), not on those of us doing the faulty thinking.

I used the words "we" and "us" on purpose in that last paragraph. Yep, that's right. This is because it isn't an attack on the worldviews of other people only. My own worldview is just as vulnerable.

As I say elsewhere on this site, there may indeed even be some sort of believing still hanging onto my worldview. The difference with me though is the fact that it is not welcome here anymore. If it is ever brought to my attention, I most certainly, genuinely do want to get rid of it.
