Creation-Science:
They claim that
a) Planet Earth and the rest of the entire
universe (especially human beings which are the centerpiece of the whole thing)
were created by their God all within the time-span of 7 actual 24 hour days as
we know them today and that
b) all modern scientists that say otherwise are either
lying and/or at least mistaken about humans evolving from earlier, distinct, far
less advanced species over billions of years.
The problem (as they try to pose
it) is not just a difference of opinion between otherwise genuine scientists or
between two equally valid and reasonable opposing ideas about the nature and
history of life on Earth. The problem is in the fact that they are not even
using science at all in coming up with their ideas in the first place so it is
not reasonable to call them scientific.
Their ideas are from a collection of
books commonly referred to as the Bible. Oh, they claim to be scientific, but
the only truly scientific thing that is part of their whole enterprise is some
of the terminology. Contrary to popular belief (I know, I'm opening another can of
worms here and giving people something else to be aware of that they will have
to think about if they are going to have a clue in this area of life) using
scientific terminology in one's writings doesn't actually make their work be
scientific.
Go ahead and take a look. There is no way what-so-ever that science
can or ever will be able to "prove" that a God created the universe
(nor that a God did not create it for that matter). As far as human evolution is
concerned, the only thing that the so-called "Creation-Scientists"
can do is bring our attention to parts of the human species which are
complicated and which we may not fully understand quite yet.
They only use
scientific terminology or the findings of genuine scientists to further their
own belief in creation by trying to cause doubt (a component that is only
possible in the minds of believers in the first place. Since science is not
something to believe in, there is no room for doubting its
findings.) in the minds of the public.
For instance, they used to focus on the
eye as having irreducible complexity. Genuine scientists do not seize on
such complexities and call them irreducibly complex just because they
can't or don't understand them as well as they'd like to. Genuine scientists do
not say things like "Well,
we can't understand it, so that must mean that it was created by God".
Rather, they state out loud the truth about that complex thing the way they
understand it at this particular point in time with the data available at this
particular point in time and leave it open-ended for others to pick up and work
on as time goes by and as our understanding and scientific capabilities increase
and mature.
We now know that even such a complicated organ as the eye is not in
fact quite the irreducibly complex thing as once thought nor as is still
presented as Proof of Intelligent Design by the believers of that
religious rhetoric. Again, there is no such thing as scientific proof of
creation because science can not produce any evidence of it. So, even the name
"Creation-Science" is an unreasonable thing to tout. A much more palatable
name from the viewpoint of a genuine scientist would be Creationism. At least
that would keep the word Science out of the title and leave the organization
with a name that would show the reason for it's existence in the first
place; to spread a myth from the world of make-believe, not to conduct genuine,
scientific study of the world in which we actually live.
Well, if you read this page and are still interested in hearing more on this
topic, you may be interested in this
page on my site. It is my Biology page. It has information about evolution
and about the debate between real, modern scientists and the pseudo-scientific
religious people that are hell-bent on the destruction of critical thinking and
muddying the waters to the point that it is too difficult for the average person
to know the difference between science and not-science and hope they'll give up
and "just believe".
