This is the central location where I announce additions or changes at Every Fork in the Road dot org. It's also kinda like a journal of thoughts and/or events having to do with me and my life (some might refer to it as a Blog [which is short for Web Log]).

To join my "What's Up?" mailing list, please see my notes about it at the bottom of this page.

In a 'Breaking News' alert from ABC news this afternoon, the news was as follows...
"VIRGINIA TECH KILLER'S FAMILY MAKES FIRST PUBLIC REMARKS SINCE MASSACRE: WE 'NEVER COULD HAVE ENVISIONED THAT HE WAS CAPABLE OF SO MUCH VIOLENCE'"

People always say this kind of bullshit, in every tragic shooting like this, and it's very annoying to me. The truth is, we're all capable of it, and the only reason people say stuff like this is because they are either ignorant of or in denial about the nature of living organisms; specifically those human primate characters.

We see this (violence toward other members of one's same organism or even clan or family) in other organisms. Add our brain power in there and BLAMMO!! Why is it so hard to comprehend that someone could be capable of doing that kind of stuff?

Shocking? Yes.
Horrible? Yes.
Unnacceptable? Yes.
Worthy of being investigated so we can attempt to avoid or cut short such events in the future? Yes.
Surprising? No.

Two hours?!?!?

Tonight, I renamed my section about beliefs, believers and the act of believing.
The new name is "the Pathology of Magical Thinking". Here's the link.

Recently I've finally been getting around to a few things in my Paleontology section.
I'll start posting bits and pieces here for a while.

First off, I've uploaded some paleo reports from Dan Woehr (a friend of a friend in Texas).
Here's the link ...By the way, due to the size of the reports, I put Dan's stuff in a password protected area (which I'll probably do with all like materials....just to make sure the bandwidth is actually going to legitimate traffic). Contact me for the details.

This morning I discovered a web site that I think a lot of you might like to check out.
It's called Losingmyreligion.com. Their banner statement (on the site and on their merchandise) is
"Stay home Sundays, Save 10%".

The tag line in the search results on Google is, "Ex-Christians helping Christians break the shackles of their religion by encouraging them to think." Here's the link to their site.

20061009 - No Ma'am
Today I added a new section to the Nature and Science area of my website.
It's called "Interesting Facts about Evolution". Here's an excerpt from the first entry...
"...
While watching some nature program on dolphins and whales on PBS this evening, something near the end of the show really caught my attention. It had to do with a difference between the males and females of the particular species they were talking about off the coast of Seattle, Washington, USA..."

I
n honor of June sixth, Two Thousand and six (666), Here's a snippet from an e-mail message I sent to a friend on this glorious occasion...

Further 'special' revelation...
(that's how they refer to God speaking to believers in post-Biblical times ;)

The true 'mark of the beast' is that, in the last days, people will begin to actually think for them selves; spreading reason and intellectual awareness; inviting others to ask questions; causing bouts of wonder and curiosity; leading them to examine and investigate extraordinary claims regarding unknowable things.

WARNING, My children:
Beware of thinking for your self. Prolonged exposure to thoughts other than those provided for you by your religion or philosophy of choice may lead to an acute case of dontbelieveanythingensis.

In honor of this 'Word from the Lord', and in honor of this last day, I have made a few changes to the look and feel of my web site.
Today, I changed the word "think" on some pages to the numbers "666".

Today I added what sort of amounts to a review of an article about critical thinking in Skeptical Inquirer magazine. The article was pointed out to me by my friend, Tom.
Here's the link.

This morning, I added a new section within another previously existing section that was there before I created this new one. [Ya, you heard it the right way correctly]
The new section is called
"et cetera, et cetera:
a discordant cacophony of redundancy at Every Fork in the Road"
It's the recently, newly renamed sub-section within another section which I previously used to call "Redundant Redundancies".

I didn't add anything new to it other than the new title, subtitle and a few comments, but here's the link.

There's something new at Every Fork in the Road; a new section about humor and comedy.

Nothing big this time, but just a funny statement by a local news anchor.
Here's the link.

Ok, I guess this entertainment thing is really working out well at this point. Three days in a row with an entry on my site that was inspired by something I heard while watching TV.

This is the first entry in my new section about humor and comedy.
Here's the link.

I know, you're thinking, "What's up with this guy? We don't hear from him for months and then, BAMM!!! he puts up two new pages in as many days?"

Well, yep. This one, once again, is from my TV viewing. I guess it's kind of like some kind of karmaic pay-back for watching too much TV in the first place. The only difference is how close to home this one really hits. Here's the link.

20060226 (XX Olympic Closing Ceremony)
This one is about something I heard while watching the NBC coverage of the closing ceremony of the XX Olympic Games. Though it really doesn't carry much weight, here's the link.

Happy Darwin Day!!!
Each year, on February 12th (the anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin ('Natural Selection'), I join the Darwin Day Program in celebrating

Today I created a new section about Religion in the Public Arena.
The link to the inaugural article is here.

(this entry is still in process....I'm writing it right now...)
I just realized something about my self which some of you might find very interesting. It has to do with the difference between fiction and reality. Specifically, I'm thinking about stories; i.e. books, TV shows, movies, etc.

For many years, I've told people (and actually thought my self) that I don't really like fiction very much. I figure, with my passion for learning, "Why waste my time and brain cells on made-up stuff when there's already so much to know that's actually real?"

I usually prefer documentaries and such. Even if it involves a certain amount of fiction (i.e. hypothetical suggestions and intelligent, educated extrapolations, etc) for the sake of 'imagining what might have been', or considering the possibilities of 'how it got this way', as long as it's just a small portion of the material involved, it doesn't turn me off. We have the skill of imagination. So, why not put it to use in ways that can actually help?

Now though, as I was pondering my residual bad mood after driving on the highway today, I realized that, I've never experienced such a thing from reading or listening to or watching some fictional presentation (nor have I had such experiences from reading or watching non-fiction, but that's not my point...you weren't supposed to think of that point :).

Of course there's a place for fiction. It's all about fantasy. There's no way that real life experiences could ever live up to that which we can imagine because we can always imagine something better.

The idealist in me help keeps fueling my fantasy life.
The realist in me keeps me from totally jumping off the fictional deep-end.

Blah, blah, blah......
It's late at night. I'm not really sure where I was going with all that, but, at least I can say that I'd rather spend my time learning than being entertained.

I'd also rather be able to drive all alone on my own highway without all those assholes cutting me off, driving slow in the passing lane, tail-gating in the right lane, crossing the yellow lines around curves, changing lanes and turning without signals, using signals in turn-only lanes, yielding at stop-signs and stopping at yield-signs and all of the other dangerous and maddening things you do with motor vehicles out there. ... and that's one fantasy that I'm pretty sure will never come true.

Don't get me wrong... I love and care about all people, but that doesn't mean I have to like the way you drive.

Mailing List = What's Up at Every Fork in the Road?
If you want to get on this list and be notified when I add new stuff, just send an e-mail to [WhatsUp -AT- EveryForkInTheRoad -DOT- org] with the following text in the subject, "EFitR_List_What's Up? Request To Join". Also, please tell me (in the body of your e-mail) who you are and what your interest is in hearing about updates on my website (One sentence is sufficient if you're willing to share, but you do not have to tell me anything to join the list if you would prefer to remain anonymous).
When you receive "What's Up?" messages from me (usually no more than two per month, and occasionally none for a couple months at a time depending on how busy I am at the task of updating my website), they will have the following text in the subject line, "EFitR_List_What's Up?". If I decide to change that subject text, I'll first try to remember to send you a notice with the original subject in it and tell you about the change before I actually implement it. Also, it will come to you from the address [WhatsUp -at- EveryForkInTheRoad -dot- org]. So, it should be obvious when you receive them that they're coming from this site.
